I decided, for no particular reason, that this month my playlist would be full of Love Songs I Love. It never hurts to put a little more happiness out into the world, right?
You can find my July playlist on Spotify and my commentary below. I hope at least one of these songs inspires you to go tell someone you love that you love them.
This song embodies that feeling of being in love and wanting to tell the world. You can hear the joy in every shout and every harmony, and it never fails to make me smile.
Favourite lyrics: "and if the lights go out in the city tonight / you and I can light it up with the fire in our eyes / and if you need a hand to hold, darlin' take both of mine"
The cutest, most upbeat song about unrequited love that you'll ever hear. And who knows—maybe this story has a happy ending after all. I'd like to think it does, anyway.
Favourite lyrics: "I think it's only fair / there's gotta be some butterflies somewhere, wanna share? / cause I like you but that's not enough / so if you will, please fall in love with me"
"Tenerife Sea" may not be one of Ed's most popular songs, but I think it's one of his best. It stands out to me because of its simplicity. Sometimes you don't need soliloquies to tell someone you love them. Sometimes you can just say it, and mean it, and that's enough.
Over the years, I've compiled this list of songs in my head that I am determined to play at my future wedding. "I Choose You" is pretty much number one.
Favourite lyrics: "my whole heart / will be yours forever / this is a beautiful start / to a lifelong love letter"
I See the Light - Mandy Moore & Zachary Levi
This is the best Disney love song of all time, don't @ me. Also, this video of Laura Osnes and Zachary Levi performing it together makes my heart melt into a puddle of happy goo.
No playlist of love songs is complete without at least a couple classics! "At Last" is timeless, and also very high up on the "songs to play at my future wedding" list.
Plus, some bonus tracks!
Kerrigan-Lowdermilk's The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown is a lovely coming-of-age musical that contains two incredible love songs. Unfortunately, neither of them are on Spotify, so I'm including some YouTube links here.
Run Away With Me - Jeremy Jordan
It will come as a surprise to absolutely no one that I think Jeremy Jordan does this song best. And by best, I mean as perfectly as a mortal human possibly could.
Say the word, and I just might listen
Say the word, and you might get your way
Loving you should be easier, but say the word...
and I might have to stay.
In an unprecedented turn of events, I have now created TWO PLAYLISTS made of mostly-happy songs! It must be the good weather getting to me or something. I promise to share some extra-sad ones in August.
